And It All Piles Up…

Ever have one of those days or even weeks where you have dishes piling up, a bathroom to be cleaned, floors to be swept and washed, dusting to be done, laundry to wash and put away, etc. but have no motivation to do anything about it all?  Life just kind of takes over and by the time you get home from work or running your errands, you just want to relax.  Ugh, that’s what we’ve been going through.  Jason’s been working overtime most weekends and he plays dartball 2 times, sometimes 3 times, a week.  I guess that means he has a bit of an excuse for not getting house work done. haha  As for me, I have been under the weather for the past couple weeks and now that I’m feeling better, I simply have no motivation.

In general, I’ve always been an early to bed and early to rise type of person. I usually like to catch up with my housework and prep meals in the early hours so that after work dinner is ready and the house is presentable.  Lately, I just don’t have the energy or motivation.  I see all of what needs to get done, and try to do something about it but then lose interest.  This is pretty unusual for me since I’m usually a “Type A” person and like things perfectly perfect.  Then the nights that Jason is actually home, I like to spend time with him.  Can’t blame me for that, right? haha

Well, guess what is planned for this weekend?!  Jason is working overtime both Saturday and Sunday, and I get to catch up with housework.  After the house is presentable, I get to start going through stuff in our basement and downsizing some more.  Now that we have a closer deadline to work towards, with our meeting with the adoption rep and all, it gives me a bit of motivation to get house projects done and clear out the house more.  Maybe if I am really ambitious I can FINALLY finish texturing and painting our kitchen and stairwell area walls.

A few years ago we started big house projects.  I’m talking about a new roof, new driveway, tore out our finished basement due to water damage from the old driveway, new glass block windows in the basement, removed all the carpeting from the main floor to expose the wood floors, completely gut and remodeled our bathroom, new kitchen sink, repainted all the walls on the main floor (besides the kitchen), painted about half of our basement walls (still have to finish the rest), chimney completely torn down and rebuilt, etc.  I can’t remember everything right now, but we’ve been doing a lot of stuff.  We still have a decent size list of things that still need to be done.  Let’s not forget the items that need to be complete before our homestudy process begins so we get to be approved faster (i.e. install a bunch more smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher, etc.).  We’re hoping to check a few more things off our list before some kiddos come into our home.  I feel like there is always something to be done when you own a home.  Now I just have to get myself moving! And yes, Jason does help out, too.  Who said being an adult would be fun? haha

Feeling Accomplished

It’s been awhile since we have written a blog post, but honestly, we have been swamped.  Every single day we have been sorting and pricing items.  We have boxes upon boxes of stuff everywhere.  For a good while, we didn’t have much of a kitchen or living room to even use.  We had my parents over this past weekend for Father’s Day and sadly we didn’t even have a surface to set our food down on.  My goal for the past couple weeks was to at least finish sorting and pricing all the donations that we had on the main floor of our home, and last night, we met this goal!  What a relief!  Now we have to find a place to put all the boxes! haha  This is what our hallway and living room currently looks like.  This pile of boxes doesn’t look like much in the pictures but it’s seriously a lot of stuff. It’s only a tiny fraction of what we still have left to go through. As you can see, the cats are liking the “climbing obstacles” that we have set up for them, and the fact that we have our coffe table back.

Our next task is to move down into the basement and start sorting and pricing items down there.  Eventually we will be moving into the garage and continue this exciting task.  Once we get into the garage, I’ll be happy to share a picture of the adventure that is ahead of us.
Besides all this sorting and pricing, we have been busy with many other things.  We printed and folded 150 copies of a letter we wrote to our friends/family.  Then had to stuff and seal the envelopes, make the mailing labels, buy stamps, etc. This past Sunday, we shared an addition 200 copies of these letters with our church family, which meant going to church early to stuff all the mailboxes for the members.

Also, we have been purchasing items we will need for the event and trying to get things situated and planned for what we will need and how things will be set up.  We handed over the task of planning quantities of foods/drinks to my dad, and he has been working with Four Men and a Grill (the folks we have preparing the food for the event), to get this part of the event taken care of.  Our kitchen and extra freezer looks like we are starting to open up our own restaurant or something.  All the cases of bottled waters, sodas, packs of brats, hot dogs, etc.  It’s starting to turn into an obstacle course of trying to figure out how to walk around our house. Watch out for the boxes, random items, soda/water, and don’t forget our random 4 cats that like to run around our feet.

Life has been beyond chaotic the past few months and the next 2-1/2 weeks will get even more chaotic, but I keep trying to remind myself that in the end it will all be worth it.  All this hard work will pay off when we officially bring our children home and have our family complete!  Honestly, the end result is one of the few things that keeps me pushing on.  I am a very stubborn and determined individual.  I love challenges and I will work my tushy off until I achieve my goals.  I may be tired and cranky the next few weeks (poor Jason haha), but soon I’ll be back to my fun and bubbly self again.  Watch out world, Christi has a goal to achieve!

Speaking of goals, this year I set a goal (with Jason) to pay off a few debts we’ve had sitting around… mainly my gazillion school loans from my two degrees.  Last year I paid down 1 of my 7 loans, and just this past weekend I paid down my 2nd loan!  What an amazing feeling that was for me once I clicked “submit payment” online.  My goal is to have 2 more school loans among other things paid off by the end of this year! I cannot wait.  I am one of those weird people who actually enjoys paying bills.  I feel a sense of accomplishment knowing we have the funds to pay our bills and being able to “check off” those bills from my spread sheet every month.  Jason and I are very fortunate that we have our jobs and can rely on our paychecks.

Lists and More Lists

I am the type of person who enjoys making lists.  I have always been an organized person.  I always had my movies in alphabetical order, books in alphabetical order, etc.  Everything had its place and purpose.  I create lists about basically everything.  I have a sense of satisfaction when I can cross things off my lists.  I feel accomplished.  Jason, on the other hand, is not an organized person, which is completely okay.  He can handle things being out-of-order and not perfect.  I guess, in a way, we kind of balance each other out.

One of my sisters loves to tease me because of all my lists.  She says I need to loosen up and just enjoy life.  She is similar to Jason in the manner of they are both more laid back individuals.  They kind of go with the flow and let life happen.  I tend to get worked up if I don’t reach my goals or complete all the items on my list.  I don’t like to feel like I failed by not completing tasks.  Jason and my sister would be perfectly content with having items not checked off their lists.  They would simply get to those tasks another day, and if not, then oh well.  Last year my sister and I started a goal to read books.  She had a goal of reading one book a month, and I decided to read 100 books in a year.  First thing I did?  Created a list of books I wanted to read.  Then as I completed books, I created a list of books completed.  Then a list of books I wanted to read.  The lists kept growing, and they continue to grow.  My sister joked and said I was taking the fun out of reading by having my lists.  I liked the challenge of having the lists and crossing things off my list.  Then as the year 2016 was ending, it was an amazing feeling knowing I could cross off my 100th book and even exceed my goal by reaching 106 books in one year.

During this adoption journey, you can bet your bottom dollar that I have lists.  I have lists of items that need to be taken care of for the fundraiser event we are planning.  I have lists of vendors we have.  List of people and organizations that have donated items.  Lists of items that need to be gathered for our application and home study process.  Lists of things I still want done around the house.  Lists, lists, and more lists.

As I’m sure you can imagine, I like my life organized and planned out.  I like to be in control of things.  So you can even further imagine what it was like when my life wasn’t going according to plan.  I created lists of things I wanted accomplished before we started a family.  I checked items off one by one.  When the time came where we were “ready” to start a family, it was very frustrating that nature wasn’t letting things happen.  Now I can sit back and laugh (a little).  While I was creating these lists and planning my life, God was probably laughing away.  God has our life planned out for us.  No matter how hard we try, we can’t change what his plans are for us.  We just have to trust and have faith.

I have always wanted a big family, and have actually thought about the idea of adopting many times, well before I even met Jason. After Jason and I met, I told him many times that I want a house full of kids.  I tell this story all the time, but I will share it again in case you never heard it before.  We went through our marriage counseling, and the Pastor asked us how many kids we both wanted.  Right away my response was “At least six!”  Jason quietly replied, “I don’t know.  Maybe two.”  I countered his response with, “The lowest I can go with is four”. This story cracks me up.  No matter how hard I try to plan things out, things just didn’t work the way I wanted.  But, this does not mean the doors have been shut for us.  We can hopefully still have the family we wanted.  Whether it’s one child, two children or the full six that I always wanted.  I’m so excited to meet our future children and bond with them in a way I can’t even imagine.  Yes, I have a list of personality traits or hobbies that I do look for when reading all the children’s profiles, but it does not mean I would say no to a child that doesn’t “match” with my list.  I am beyond curious to see what child(ren) God places in our lives.
